Michael's Scholarships

In addition to all of the schools that Michael applied to, he applied to a lot of scholarships. He got interviews for some, and some of them he was even told that he was by far the most qualified of the applicants.  Because we make too much money, most of the scholarships did not come through for him. He did get a couple of notable scholarships however.  The first one was from Chick-fil-A.  They came out and gave it to him at our house.

The second scholarship was from IBEW.  Grammie and Grandpa found out in the early part of the year that since he is a grandchild of Grandpa and since Grandpa still pays some union dues, that he was eligible to apply.  They gave him a $4,000 scholarship.  Grammie and Grandpa were nice enough to fly him out to visit them where he attended the union meeting where they acknowledged his accomplishments.

The last and best scholarship was from Texas A&M.  Since he was a National Merit Scholar, he was able to get $11k a year toward his tuition.  He was frustrated that at TAMU where he was auto-admitted and was a superstar that they didn't have a full ride scholarship for him.  After he got to school in the fall, he heard about a scholarship for national merit scholars who were engineers.  He realized that he didn't get considered for the scholarship because he didn't click the right box on his application.  He decided to email the scholarship committee to see if they would be willing to consider him for the scholarship at this later date.  They let him apply, made him submit letters of recommendation and go through a zoom interview.  He was able to get the scholarship.  The nice thing about the scholarship is that he then belongs to an elite group of students that mentor each other and have special meetings together.  We were so proud that he didn't let this opportunity pass him by, but that he figured out how to make it happen when he found out about it. They had a reception for some portion of the TAMU scholarships and Joe and I were able to attend.
