For my birthday and our anniversary we were supposed to go to the Florida Keys. Unfortunately a few days before we were supposed to leave, Joe came down with covid. His covid was pretty hard on him, he was laid up in bed for a week, but he got over it without going to the hospital or having long covid, so that was good. We were able to go to Florida a few weeks later at the end of the month.
The first thing we did was a kayak tour through the mangroves. This was the coolest thing! There were several places where we had to lay completely flat to get under the mangroves and it was so peaceful. We also saw a bunch of jellyfish in this cool open area in the mangroves.
We went to the southern most point, and hung out at the beach one day.
We spent some time walking around Key West. Our hotel was a block from Duval Street in Key West and it was fun to walk around and people watch and go into some of the shops. We came up a day early so we could spend the last night in Miami at Miami Beach. With Covid, they had closed Ocean Drive to cars and so everyone walked along there. I was mesmerized by the art deco architecture and fascinated by the people there. It was very enjoyable to walk around and see, then we stopped and got dinner and Joe got the biggest (virgin) pina colada ever!
Our last day there we went out to the everglades and went on a swamp boat tour. We got to see an alligator. It wasn't as exciting as a Louisiana swamp boat tour because the Everglades are a national park and so you can't feed the alligators and you have to drive in the more commonly driven in areas of the everglades, but I still was interested in learning all about the everglades, I had no idea it was a huge river.
We even had time to watch a movie before our plane took off. Then we had to fly way far north to avoid a huge hurricane, but we made it home safely, so that was the most important part.
